Four quick and easy World Book Day costume ideas your kids will love The Sun

With a few clever tips and tricks, some glue and double-sided tape, you’ll be able to make costumes from bits you have in the house or a quick raid of the crafts cupboard – and save a bit of cash too. Follow ABBY McHALE’s step-by-step guide to creating famous characters in time for World Book Day – with the help of Jorgie Brown from Oxford and Isaiah Carter from Southampton, both six.

Queen Of Hearts

YOU NEED:

  • White, yellow and red card
  • face paint
  • scissors
  • red and white tulle
  • pencil
  • safety pins
  • hair pins
  • glue
  • black top
  • leggings
  • Draw a heart shape on A4 red card and cut out, stick the card to the black top either using glue or double-sided sticky tape.
  • Take the white card and draw a semi-circle, cut out the circle and discard, with the remainder of the card fasten around the neck, sealing the two ends with glue.
  • Draw the shape of a crown on the yellow card, cut out the outline, make two incisions at either end of the crown and fasten with hair pins.
  • With the tulle (crepe paper will also work) cut vertical strips, tuck into the waistband of the leggings and fasten with safety pins.
  • Mr Tickle

    YOU NEED:

    • Skipping rope
    • orange, blue and white card
    • black marker pen
    • glue
    • masking tape
    • scissors
  • Using two separate bits of orange card draw a circle outline on each piece for Mr Tickle’s body, then underneath draw the outline of his feet and cut out.
  • With the marker pen draw two eyes and his smile, using white card cut out the shape of his smile and draw on a cross pattern for his teeth, glue on to the orange card.
  • Using the blue card draw an outline for the hat, cut out and stick on to the top of the orange card.
  • With another piece of orange card draw around both of your hands and cut out, attach to both ends of the skipping rope and thread through the T-shirt tying a knot with the skipping rope at the back to secure. Cut out two strips of orange card and use these to fasten the front and back of the costume together with tape.
  • Paddington Bear

    YOU NEED:

    • Blue duffle coat
    • brown trousers
    • yellow wellies
    • brown box
    • red and brown card
    • tin foil
    • black face paint
    • safety pins
    • marker pen
    • black masking tape
  • In order to make Paddington’s hat fold the red card into half and half again, open the card back out once and leaving the opening at the bottom fold one corner down to meet the crease in the middle doing the same on the other side, lift the bottom flap up making a crease and do the same on the other side.
  • With the brown card make a label that says “Wanted on Voyage” and stick to the box, write the initials P.B. in marker pen on the front of the box.
  • Using more brown card cut out the shape of a luggage tag and write on “Please look after this bear – thank you”, fasten on to the coat with a safety pin.
  • Take the tin foil and mould into the shape of a handle, fastening it to the top of the box and seal with black masking tape.

    The Tiger Who Came To Tea

    YOU NEED:

    • Orange and white card
    • scissors
    • black and white tape
    • a pair of old tights
    • face paint
    • orange T-shirt
    • black leggings
    • safety pin
    • something to stuff with (newspapers, socks etc)
    • a black pen
  • Cut out a long vertical cylinder shape from the white card, draw on squiggly lines across the card to resemble a tiger’s fur, stick the card on to the T-shirt using double-sided sticky tape or glue.
  • Cut out black strips and small triangle shapes of masking tape, stick them on to the T-shirt and cover.
  • Using a pair of old tights, cut one leg off and begin to stuff. Take the orange card and cut vertical strips, place them around the tights and stick with double-sided sticky tape, do this until the tights are covered leaving some gaps of black so it looks like a tiger’s tail.
  • Attach to the T-shirt with a safety pin.
