Two dead in A50 accident as car leaves dual carriageway and crashes into bridge pillar

TWO men have died following a crash on the A50 after the car they were travelling in left the dual carriageway and crashed into a bridge pillar.

Emergency services rushed to the scene between Toyota Island and Chellaston, Derbyshire, around 10.15am on Sunday morning.

The victims were in the same car when the tragedy happened.

Cops say no other vehicles were involved.

The families of both men have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Derbyshire Police said this morning: "Emergency services were called to reports of a serious collision on the road, roughly halfway between Toyota and the exit for Chellaston, at about 10.15am today.

"Both sides are now closed from Toyota Island to Chellaston and will remain closed for a significant time.

"The Arleston Lane bridge from Sinfin over the A50 is also closed.

"Motorists should avoid the area. We will update our social media channels when the road reopens."

The road was closed between junction 4 and junction 3 for the majority of the day.
