The best lightweight duvets for summer 2020

KEEP your cool on warm summer nights with these seasonal duvet switches.

Warm summer days are something most of us look forward to all year round, but the balmier days are often accompanied by awkward nights when a regular duvet leaves you hot and clammy but sleeping in a sheet is somehow a bit chilly – we’re still in Britain after all.

A duvet’s warmth (rather than its weight) is measured in togs – the higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet.

It’s still a personal choice, and one you may need to negotiate if you have a sleeping partner, but a duvet in the 2.5 to 7 tog range should nail your summer sleeping requirements.

As well as its warmth level, choosing what your duvet is filled with will also be up to personal preference as well as budget constraints and whether or not you suffer from any allergies.

Some will like the practicality and softness offered by synthetic fillings like microfibre and hollowfibre, while others will prefer the luxury and warmth of a puffy feather or down duvet.

Natural fillings such as wool and silk are a luxurious option for allergy sufferers and there’s also cotton, which is breathable and machine-washable.

We’ve rounded up some practical summer duvet options below with prices quoted for a standard double throughout to allow for comparison.

1. Woolroom

  • (AD) Woolroom lightweight double wool duvet, £87.49 from Amazon – buy here
  • This lightweight duvet is filled with 100% organic natural British wool and incredibly, is machine washable, the only one on the market claim the manufacturers.

The natural filling feels soft and luxurious and in combination with the unbleached organic cotton outer cover, will regulate your temperature throughout the night.

The Woolroom summer duvet is also certified hypoallergenic by Allergy UK, which means it reduces the chances of congestion and puffy eyes for allergy sufferers.

    2. Silentnight

  • (AD) Silentnight Yours and Mine split tog duvet, £26.99 from Amazon – buy here
  • The perfect summer duvet choice for couples warring about the temperature of the bed, this split tog duvet will give you both a better night’s sleep and may even save your relationship.

The duvet is split down the middle, with a lighter 4.5 tog half for the one that gets a bit sweaty and a warmer 7.5 tog half for the one that feels the chill.

The squishy hollowfibre inner and soft microfibre cover will come up beautifully every time you stick the duvet in the washing machine and for under 30 quid, it has a price that nobody's going to argue about.

    3. Marks & Spencer

    • Duck feather and down 4.5 tog duvet, £35 from Marks & Spencer – buy here

Duck feather and down duvets are puffy, snuggly and slightly noisy to sleep in.

But if you’re addicted to yours and couldn’t bear to give it up over the summer, you could try switching to a lighter, lower-tog version.

This keenly priced duvet from M&S has a soft cotton cover and is beautifully breathable, ensuring a comfortable slumber on warmer nights. You can also machine wash and dry it, though if you have a double, you’ll probably need to use the industrial-sized machines at the launderette.

    4. John Lewis

    • Natural Collection mulberry silk duvet, £100 from John Lewis – buy here

The most luxurious offering on our list, this 3- to 4-tog mulberry silk-filled summer duvet is described by John Lewis as “cosy and light” and is one of the retailer’s bestsellers.

Because it isn’t bulky, the duvet will drape beautifully over your bed and the 3D pocket construction keeps the silk filling evenly distributed throughout.

Silk as a duvet filling is naturally both temperature-regulating and unattractive to dust mites, making it perfect for allergy sufferers.

Bear in mind though, that silk cannot be washed or dry-cleaned so you might need to give up your habit of drinking tea in bed!

    5. Slumberdown

    • Slumberdown summer cool 4.5 tog duvet, £16 from Argos – buy here

If you don’t want to spend a fortune on a duvet you’re only going to be using for a couple of months each year, this 4.5 tog duvet from Slumberdown could be the answer.

Its synthetic filling means that the duvet is easily washed and tumble-dried at home, making it a practical choice if your pet sleeps with you at night.

The duvet will keep you cool and comfortable however short or long the summer.

    6. Simba

    • Hybrid duvet, £149 from Simba – buy here

The high-tech Simba duvet features three layers of clever fabrics designed to keep you at a comfortable temperature all night long.

The top layer is Stratos, a special fabric which the retailer says checks your temperature in the same way as the ozone layer regulates the temperature of the Earth.

If you get too hot, it absorbs heat to cool you down, and if you’re too cold, it releases heat to warm you up.

The middle layer is heat-dissipating and the bottom layer is sustainably-sourced cotton.

The Simba Hybrid is designed to be used throughout the year, so could prove a good investment if you don’t have storage space for a second bed-covering.

    7. Marks & Spencer

    • Comfortably Cool 1-tog synthetic duvet, £35 from Marks & Spencer – buy here

This super-soft, lighter-than-light summer duvet is just one tog, so it’s a step up from a sheet and perfect for staying fresh and cool all night long.

The synthetic filling means you can just pop it in the washing machine when needed and it will also survive storage in a vacuum compression bag when the summer’s over.
