Knifeman in gas mask and camouflage gear is shot by police after 'going on rampage and setting home

THIS is the dramatic moment a knifeman in camouflage gear and a gas mask was shot by armed police after a tense stand-off.

Police stormed a block of flats in Inverness after the man went on a rampage brandishing two blades.

Pictures show officers cornering the suspect after he abseiled out his home, which was on fire.

He was locked in a stand-off with police for around 15 minutes before charging at them with what appeared to be a chain.

Armed cops then opened fire and shot the man in front of stunned residents.

After a few seconds, the suspect ran at them again before he was detained.

Firefighters then battled the blaze at the flat following the horror at around 3pm yesterday.

Police Scotland confirmed a 40-year-old man was arrested and taken to Raigmore Hospital where he remains with serious injuries.

They are urging anyone with footage to get in touch.

A spokesman for for the force said: "Officers attended at a property on Polvanie View in Inverness around 3pm on Thursday, March 31, following a report of concern for a person.

"On attendance, the property was on fire. No one was injured as a result of the fire and it was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and a number of neighbouring residents have had to be evacuated.

"During the incident a 40-year-old man was shot by the police. He has been arrested in connection with the incident and has been taken to Raigmore Hospital for treatment where he remains with serious injuries.

"As with any firearm and Taser deployment, the circumstances of the incident have been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC)."
