A V good idea
THE “V for veterans” ID card is a superb idea, a fitting salute to those who have fought for our country.

It will have practical advantages. But we hope it also increases the respect veterans are shown.
In the US, serving and ex-forces personnel proudly display their military status.
They get discounts in shops, hotels, restaurants and elsewhere, and enjoy a public gratitude we should aim to match.
There are forces discount cards here too. But officially recognising our veterans’ service on a driving licence or ID card would make their life easier AND encourage more retailers to get involved.
The Sun will honour our brave troops tonight at our annual Millies awards.
It is great to see the Government prioritising them too.
Press wreckers

UNELECTED Lords could today inflict terrible damage on our democracy.
Anti-Press peers want a barrage of changes to the Data Protection Bill which could kill investigative journalism.
They would rob reporters of a public interest defence when using private data to uncover scandal — unless signed up to State-backed regulator Impress.
That’s the rogue Max Mosley-funded outfit staffed by biased zealots who have campaigned AGAINST the Press.
No serious papers, most already rigorously regulated, will submit to their control.
So these amendments, hitting broadcasters too, would wreck the Press’s key role in holding the powerful to account.
They must be defeated.
Now EU pay up

THE Sun has not objected to our Brexit “divorce bill”. We DO have a problem with paying over the odds for the EU’s defence.
Brussels will extract about £39billion from Britain in exchange for a trade deal.
Meanwhile Germany has reportedly saved itself about £107billion over five years by ignoring Nato’s defence spending target of two per cent of GDP.
Italy saved £68billion, Spain £56billion.
Britain meets the target — and foots almost a third of the defence bill across the EU. That cannot go on. When trade talks start, the PM must insist on this:
If we are pulling our weight, so must every EU nation wanting Nato’s protection.

Bring on Don

DONALD Trump will make a “working visit” to the UK early next year. Good.
You don’t have to like the man to respect his position as President.
Huge numbers will protest, helpless to resist a golden opportunity for mass virtue-signalling.
All they will achieve is to harm relations with our No1 ally.
We should stop treating Trump like he is Hitler and get on with a full State visit.
We’ve rolled out the red carpet for worse.
